The goal of CitBIO – Center for Intestinal Absorption and Transport of Biopharmaceuticals – is to develop methods for efficient oral delivery of biopharmaceuticals to target cells, tissues and organs, facilitated by innovative peptide engineering and nanotechnologies. Currently, administration of several therapeutic drugs, such as insulin, require the use of syringes and needles to achieve therapeutic bioavailability. This comes at a high toll for society and the individual, due to discomfort, risk of infection, and possibly required assistance by health personnel. CitBIO aims to increase patient compliance by developing new methods that can significantly increase the absorption of pharmaceutical peptides and proteins in the intestines, such that these drugs can be administered to people as tablets or capsules. To reach these goals, a combination of state-of-the-art experimental and data-analytic methods are utilized.
